Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr. was born in Baltimore on June 20, 1920. He graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1941 and entered the US Navy as a cryptographer. After World War II, he went to Harvard Law School, graduating in 1948. After law school, he worked first for Philadelphia law firm of Barnes, Dechart, Price, Smith and Clark.
